Pirates, Chiefs into Nedbank Cup semifinals

PIC: Orlando Pirates celebrate their passage to the semifinals

Defending champions Orlando Pirates and their great Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs both booked their places in the semifinals of the 2025 Nedbank Cup after two tough last-8 fixtures on Saturday.
Pirates defeated SuperSport United and Chiefs edged Stellenbosch FC to set up the tantalising prospect of the Soweto Derby semifinal.
Holders Pirates were given a scare by SuperSport but eventually triumphed 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Pirates took the lead when 19-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi, in just his second ever senior matches, fired the ball into the back of the net from 20-yards with a thunderous strike.
But a mix-up at the back allowed SuperSport to equalise through former Pirates strikers Terrence Dzvukamanja, who netted the winner for The Buccaneers in the 2023 Nedbank Cup decider against Sekhukhune United.
Pirates regained the lead just before halftime when Evidence Makgopa poked the ball home from close-range, and it looked as though the visitors would hold on.
That was until Gape Moralo popped up in the second minute of injury-time at the end of the game to seal a dramatic equaliser for SuperSport with a stunning run to beat two defenders and fire in a shot off the post.
Pirates held their nerve in the shoot-out, though SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss almost kept Patrick Maswanganyi spot-kick out, which would have sent Matsatsantsa into the next round.
As it is though, Pirates coach Jose Riveiro completes a 13th game unbeaten in the Nedbank Cup to extend his own record, and is on course for a third title win in a row.

Pule Mmodi and Mfundo Vilakazi scored late goals for Chiefs as they beat Stellenbosch FC 3-1 in their quarterfinal clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.
Chiefs have not won a trophy of any sort since 2015, and last picked up the Nedbank Cup in 2013, but will hope they can end that run this season.

Inacio Miguel puts Chiefs ahead from the penalty-spot after Ismaël Touré’s handball, but Andre De Jong equalised for Stellenbosch with a header three minutes from the end of 90 minutes.
It seemed sure the game would go to extra-time, but Mmodi and Vilakazi’s two quick goals send Chiefs into the semifinals. Mmodi’s goal takes him joint top of the scorers list this season with four goals, level with Pirates’ Tshegofatso Mabasa.
The fixture between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United that had been scheduled for Saturday has been postponed.
